Website ownership guide

Domain, hosting and maintenance are three different things.

Separating these costs makes it easier to understand what you own, what renews each year and who is responsible when something changes.

Discuss your website

Domain name

The domain is the address people type, such as webval.my. It is registered for a fixed period and must be renewed. WebVal charges domain registration and renewal separately at cost price for the standard package.

Website hosting

Hosting stores and serves the website files. The suitable arrangement depends on the project and should be confirmed before launch, including who controls the account and whether the plan has limits.

Maintenance

Maintenance may include content updates, dependency updates, backups, monitoring or support. A static one-page site usually needs less maintenance than ecommerce or a custom application, but business information should still be reviewed regularly.

Questions to ask before launch

  • Whose name is the domain registered under?
  • Who controls DNS and hosting?
  • What renews and at what price?
  • How are future edits requested and charged?
  • What files and access details are handed over?
